December Jobs in the Garden!

Even with the dark early mornings the nights pulling in fast, there is still a lot that can be done in the garden throughout the month of December. Below are just a few of our top tips & jobs to keep you busy this month.

  • Use fleece to protect delicate plants, protect taps and prevent ponds from freezing in the frost and throughout the winter months
  • Ensure that bird feeders are clean and stocked with high energy foods such as fat balls, suet blocks and sunflower seeds, will bird baths and prevent from freezing.
  • Clean out old nest boxes and put out new ones for the Spring.
  • Look through catalogues to plan next years planting of seeds and potatoes
  • Check green house heaters are working
  • Prune acers, birches and vines before Christmas to avoid bleeding, open grown apples and pear should also be pruned not those growing against a wall.
  • Harvest leeks, cabbage, sprouts and all remaining root crops
  • Deciduous trees and shrubs can still be planted or moved throughout this month
  • Protect sheds and out-buildings from mice and rats
  • Reduce watering house plants, keep indoor cyclamen in cool bright position, poinsettias need to be in a cool bright position away from heaters and draughts.
  • Clean and scrub paths, decking and brick paved areas with ‘patio magic’
  • Raise pots by using pot feet to improve drainage, violas, cyclamen and pansies can be used to add colour
  • Remember even if your Christmas tree has no roots it will still need water to prolong its life, spray with a fine water mist to help stop the needles dropping
