September Jobs in the Garden!

Garden Center Overstrand

September has arrived! We’ve had such a busy summer and September really has crept up on us. As we move through September, there are new challenges in the garden and lots of preparation needed, ready for the colder weather. Here are the jobs for the garden for September:

  • Harvest fruit and vegetables, especially those last few potatoes you’ve been saving!
  • Put a net over your pond to prevent leaves from falling in over the coming weeks
  • Continue to water new plants on drier days
  • Plant spring-flowering bulbs ready for post-winter colour
  • Dead head, water and feed hanging baskets to keep them blooming to mid-autumn, once they’re done, replace with winter/spring flowering bulbs
  • Autumn is a great time to plant any shrubs or trees so they can settle in over winter
  • Clear dead leaves frequently to avoid them rotting and causing disease
  • Reduce frequency of lawn mowing and raise the height of the cut to increase its resistance to treading
  • Now is an ideal time to reseed any areas of patchy lawn and apply weed killer
